Abstract Drawings by Darcy Johnson and Deconstructed sculpture by Joel Prévost

ENCODED FORMS residency and exhibit

March 1st- 31st, 2023, Sparrow Artspace, Calgary, AB

The continued collaboration of sculptor Joel A Prevost, and the drawings and paintings of Darcy Johnson

Joel is a classical sculptor of the human form. Darcy is an abstract artist who is interested in the human mind, memory and organic processes. Both artists have had many years to develop their particular visual language and find that there are ways their artwork overlaps and inspires the other.

For this exhibit and residency, Darcy and Joel continue creating drawings and sculptures that respond to each other's artwork. These collaborations reference the changing human experience of ourselves and our environment. Both Joel’s and Darcy’s work expresses the ‘organic’ coming to terms with the ‘synthetic’, as we collectively confront technology, consciousness and our relationship to other organisms.

Opening Night of Exhibit: Thursday, March 9th from 5 - 9 pm.

My Abstraction on Paper Course March 11th and 18th, in Sparrow Artspace.

We will experiment with various drawing and painting media on paper to explore composition, mark-making, colour theory and the emergence of our individual visual language in abstract art. This course is appropriate for both beginning and experienced artists.

The reason for working on paper is to feel free to create many different experimental pieces to play with, compare and perhaps develop later or use as references for paintings or other larger artworks. Below are photos from this course.

Expressive mark-making.
